Google patent application could mean melody-matching for YouTube

YouTube has become a treasure trove for rare live editions , outtakes and covers of popular songs — the latter making stars out of acts like Pomplamoose. However, Google and the recording industry don’t feel the same way, but the site’s famous content filtering system can only handle exact matches of recorded songs — so that 14-year-old moppet’s cover version of Born this Way remains unfiltered. That could change should a patent application made available today result in a workable product

Google Music users granted de-authentication reprieve as company retools activation system

Google Music users learned of a frightful new policy this morning that dictates a user may de-authorize only four devices in a year, out of ten total activations. While the policy is likely to go unnoticed by the majority of consumers, it instantly created a great pain for those who regularly flash ROMs to their phones and tablets. It seems the road to de-authorization hell is paved with good intentions, however, as Google has since responded to critics with the revelation that it’ll introduce an activation system that accounts for such nuances. We’ve determined through our own experimentation that Google has temporarily suspended the de-authorization limit of four devices, and while it’s difficult to know how long this reprieve will last, we’re hopeful that it’ll remain in effect until Google implements this new system to recognize duplicate authorizations.

Sprint’s Android users get carrier billing in Google Play

American Android users started getting carrier billing in Google Play early this month through T-Mobile (and later AT&T), and now Sprint can join the party. Any app, book, music or video purchase can be tacked on to the monthly bill for your EVO 4G LTE instead of going through Google. The move leaves Verizon as the only major US carrier without a carrier billing option, so you’ll have to sit tight if you own the original US Galaxy Nexus and hate the thought of a separate download bill

Bricolo mechanical music system hand-on (video)

Nick Yulman has been doing the whole mechanical music thing for sometime. In fact, the first time he came to our attention was at Maker Faire a couple of years back, when he had a cadre of small robotic instruments set up on a table in a quiet corner near the food stands.

PSA: Google Music allows four device de-authorizations per year, rooters beware

Just when you thought you could go on rooting and switching ROMs with impunity, it turns out you can’t — at least, not if you want to continue enjoying your Google Music account. Watchful eyes at XDA Developers have discovered a snag in Google’s authorization system, which means that not only is there an upper limit of ten devices that can be authorized simultaneously, but there’s also a limit of four de-authorizations per year. Since every time you flash your phone or tablet counts as a new authorization, and since your other devices probably hog a few tickets already, rooters will quickly hit the ten-device limit, at which point they’re going to have to think long and hard about their de-auth strategy. Is that a ration of one flash per quarter? But then what happens if you buy a new device in a few months’ time

UK gets official Top 100 music streaming chart next week, Billboard seen crying in the corner

Used to be, musicians were judged (commercially speaking, of course) by how much radio play they got and how many albums and singles they sold. The UK’s answer to Billboard, the Official Charts Company, has seen a future filled with streaming music from services like Spotify , Napster and Deezer and decided that it needed a streaming chart to truly judge the success or failure of today’s, and tomorrow’s, top tunes. Thus, a Top 100 streaming chart was created and is set to launch next Monday, May 14

Nyx Mobile Twist Connect hands-on

It’s not often that we write about a feature phone, but we were charmed by the Twist Connect’s unique design. The dual-SIM device prides itself on its integration with Nyx Messenger, social networks like Twitter and it’s MP3-playing abilities. It’s the music playing features that caught our attention. The whole bottom of the phone rotates, switching from a full QWERTY keyboard, to a set of dedicated music controls. In messaging mode the keypad is angled out on a chin to make typing easier, while keeping the screen in a better position for visibility — it wasn’t the greatest display, easily getting washed out at even slight angles under the conventions center’s lights. Give it a twist (hence the name) and the keyboard gets stuck to the rear, exposing a pair of stereo speakers and a set of controls to raise and lower the volume, skip tracks and, of course, play and pause your tunes

Heartbeat visualizer lets your ticker power a light show (video)

It may look like something that’d be at home in iTunes, but this visualizer developed by NYU student Phan V is linked to something even more unique to you than your music collection. With the aid of a mic’d up stethoscope, it’s able to visualize a person’s heartbeat in a manner that has quite a bit more punch than the usual means — the person’s pulse rate determines the speed of the animation, while the volume of the heartbeat captured determines the brightness. Practical? Maybe not, but you can check it out in action in the video after the break.
