Pulse Surface Controller System: bangs the drum, desk, window

The Pulse Surface Controller is a vibration-based musical instrument that finally puts those years of air drumming to use. It’s a small, piezo-based MIDI controller that lets you turn pretty much any surface into a musical instrument. The device has a built-in suction cup, comes with velcro straps and plugs into your computer’s microphone port. The fun really starts with the dedicated controller software, that converts your percussive punches to your virtual instrument of choice

HTC developing music streaming service, wireless boombox?

After having already acquired a stake in Beats Audio, HTC is reportedly looking to expand its reach even further, with the help of a new music streaming service. That’s according to a report from GigaOM , which cites unnamed sources “familiar with the company’s plans.” These plans apparently include a new line of tablets and handsets, along with the aforementioned streaming service, to be spearheaded by Jimmy Iovine — Beats head and Chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M. Details, of course, remain scarce, but GigaOM ‘s sources say that the service will be included as a default client in HTC’s handsets and tablets, and that it could launch as early as this month, at Mobile World Congress . The idea, apparently, is to differentiate Peter Chow’s company from its competitors, and it’s one that’s been in the works for quite some time .

Sony Z Series Walkman Player review

Since it was announced last August, we’ve anxiously been waiting for Sony’s flagship Walkman Z (the first to feature Android) to hit US shores. (It made it here well after the holidays passed. Better late than never, right?) While Sony is billing the Z as a Walkman first and foremost, its spacious 4.3-inch display and 1GHz Tegra 2 SoC ensure it’s powerful and well-sized for playing games and generally making the most of Gingerbread. The device will be available in a variety of flavors, with up to 32GB of storage ($330), though for the purposes of this review we’ve been rocking the entry-level 8GB model ($250). Although we haven’t exactly been charmed by similar devices vying for a piece of the iPod Touch’s market share, the Walkman Z has plenty of promise. The question is, does it deliver

Korg unveils two new Kaoss family members, brings anarchy to your pocket

Two K-words we’re almost always pleased to hear: Korg and Kaoss. Good, then, that the former has decided to make more of the latter — the mini Kaoss Pad 2, and Kaossilator 2, to be precise. Both new editions will slip in your pocket, and are dominated by that all-important X-Y pad.

Line6 introduces StageScape visual mixer, lets you touch it up to eleven

It might seem like we’ve gone mixer mad around here, but with a huge music trade-show starting this week, it’s no surprise there’s a pile of new tech on offer. The StageScape M20d visual mixer from Line 6 being one such example. Of course, we have inputs (12 line / mic, four line-only, and two for USB/SD streaming) and outputs (four XLR monitors, two master) all strummed along by internal 32-bit floating-point processing

Sony schedules PSN maintenance today, wants you to know this time it’s on purpose

Sony knows you’re likely scarred for life after its many security snafus, so it’s doing all it can to keep you in the loop in regards to its PSN . The network will be experiencing a temporary outage today to make room for “routine scheduled maintenance” starting at 11AM ET and ending at approximately midnight. As usual in these scenarios, you won’t have access to any PlayStation services on your PS3 or PSP, including PlayStation Home and Sony’s Music and Video Unlimited offerings

Line 6 Mobile Keys iDevice MIDI controllers hands-on (Video)

Musical device maker Line 6 has widened its range of music-making peripherals to include these two new MIDI controllers for your iDevice. It’s the first (so it says) bus-powered gear that’ll draw a tenth of your iPad’s battery — meaning you’ll likely get nine hours of music-makin’ on a full charge. We gave the devices a play and found them a joy to use, the keys were comfortable and had some weight, solidly built with chunky rubber volume controls and LED-backlit octave switch keys. The only downside is there’s no natural slot (or groove) to place your iPad at the right angle for sustained use. After the break we’ve got a video with some pretty amateurish playing, but don’t let the assault upon your ears dissuade you from how good this device feels

Nevermore: Beyond Oblivion fades off into… oblivion

For Beyond Oblivion , the end (see: tomorrow) is nigh — the sun is setting on the service, the curtains are drawing close on its operations and that final, flickering flame of funding is about to be extinguished. But there’s no need to slug through the five stages of mourning here, this fledgling iTunes competitor never really stood a chance. With a unique business model that paid rights holders for every track played, the company bled more cash than it raked in, ultimately leading to a shuttering of its public beta. So, enjoy that last dance ’round your room rocking out to BO’s library of cloud-streamed tunes.
