DirecTV to offer broadband to the boonies, teams up with ViaSat and Hughes Satellite providers

Sure, living in the boonies may give you plenty of space to test out high-tech farming equipment , but at what cost? Rural homesteads just aren’t suited for ye olde landline broadband and those fancy satellite setups cost a pretty penny. DirecTV understands, and has struck deals with ViaSat and Hughes to bundle their stellar bandwidth with pre-existing triple play packages to help reign in the cost of high-speed internet.

Cox seeks 700MHz spectrum transfer to AT&T, U.S. Cellular

Spectrum is the new oil. Or, so it would appear given all the backbiting that’s overtaken the wireless industry as of late. One company, however, is perched advantageously to benefit from these squabbles and that’s Cox . In separate filings to the Commission dated today, the cabler’s begun the official process of seeking approval to transfer portions of its 700MHz holdings in the A and B blocks — acquired during an FCC auction back in 2008 — to U.S. Cellular and AT&T, respectively.

HP takes print away from town for seven days, laughs at ‘print is dead’ claim (updated)

With e-books and digital subscription of magazines and newspapers becoming the new hot, many are sending off the message that print is gradually losing or has even already lost to its digital counterpart, while others argue that print is far from dead. Needless to say, being one of the leading manufacturers of printers, HP took the “print is dead” claim quite personally — and perhaps too literally. How so? Well, the company commissioned a project that got participants in the US, India and Singapore to live without printed materials — including newspapers, books, labels, packaging, ID cards and even some clothes — for two days.

UK gets official Top 100 music streaming chart next week, Billboard seen crying in the corner

Used to be, musicians were judged (commercially speaking, of course) by how much radio play they got and how many albums and singles they sold. The UK’s answer to Billboard, the Official Charts Company, has seen a future filled with streaming music from services like Spotify , Napster and Deezer and decided that it needed a streaming chart to truly judge the success or failure of today’s, and tomorrow’s, top tunes. Thus, a Top 100 streaming chart was created and is set to launch next Monday, May 14

BlackBerry 10 developer toolkit released in beta, adds Native and WebWorks SDKs for app-building flexibility

Will BlackBerry 10 be the hallowed OS that heals Waterloo’s recent wounds or yet another RIM -shot to highlight its foibles? Only the fickle tide of consumer interest will certainly tell. FCC approves transfer of AWS spectrum from AT&T to T-Mobile

AT&T may have been hoping for the FCC to put the rejection stamp on its proposed transfer of key AWS spectrum to T-Mobile, but no such luck for the GSM giant this time. The fourth-largest carrier in the US, as a consolation prize for humoring AT&T’s acquisition attempt , has been given the official go-ahead on accepting spectrum in a grand total of 128 Cellular Market Areas, including 12 of the top 20 markets in the country. This newly acquired property appears to be a key factor in T-Mo’s LTE deployment strategy next year, as the company has recently announced plans to invest $4 billion in pushing out its next-gen network. HackStore is like Cydia for Mac OS X, replaces walled garden with open dacha

Despite its loud anti-piracy notice, Andrey Fedotov’s HackStore sees no issue in ripping off the official App Store’s interface. Nevertheless, its aim is to gather up legit and readily available apps that didn’t make it past Apple’s trellis for whatever reason, and hopefully with Fedotov keeping an eye out for malware . You’ll find FileZilla, Gimp and many rarer specimens — and they’re all just regular .dmg files so there’s actually no hacking involved. That said, we downloaded the RTF to ePUB Converter and then struggled to make it run, so we’re not ready to vouch for HackStore’s ease-of-use any more than its security or legality.

Roku 2 boxes updated for Francophones and English speakers alike

The latest update for Roku 2 and LT boxes is rolling out to all now, bringing the boxes to v4.6 and reportedly improving system navigation performance “by up to 50 percent”. As noticed by Zatz Not Funny when it first started leaking out, this version includes the French language support required by Roku’s Canadian launch (that’s the channel selection for Canada pictured above) this week, while the official blog notes several other fixes and tweaks that should make launching channels like Netflix and BBC iPlayer a more reliable experience. As usual, it should be pushed to every box over the next couple of days, but you can speed up the process by manually checking for an update. Have an older Roku player? Don’t worry, Director of Product Management Tom Markworth closes telling owners to “stay tuned” for future updates coming their way as well. Roku 2 boxes updated for Francophones and English speakers alike originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 18 Apr 2012 16:27:00 EDT.
